What to know about organ and tissue donation

Organ and tissue donation is a critical and life-saving decision that can have a profound impact on individuals in need of transplants. In Alberta, here are some important things to know about organ and tissue donation:

  • The first priority of healthcare professionals is to save lives. Your choice to be a donor does not affect the quality of life-saving medical care you receive.
  • There will never be any cost to your family or estate if you donate organs or tissue.
  • Organ and tissue recovery will only happen after every effort has been made to save your life.
  • Organ and tissue donation should not affect preferred funeral arrangements.
  • More than 4,500 Canadians, including more than 500 Albertans, are on the wait list for an organ transplant.
  • It is important to share your organ donation wishes with your loved ones.

Organ and tissue donation is the process of voluntarily giving organs, tissues, or both from a deceased or living donor to save or improve the lives of individuals with organ failure, medical conditions, or injuries. Organs like the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and tissues such as skin, corneas, and bone can be transplanted to restore health and enhance the quality of life.

Most people can be potential donors regardless of age, medical history, or ethnicity. Medical professionals assess suitability at the time of death based on medical and lifestyle factors. Even individuals with certain medical conditions may be eligible to donate specific organs or tissues.

To become an organ and tissue donor, you need to register your decision with Alberta Registry. Registration can often be done online, through driver’s License registration, or at our office. It’s crucial to communicate your decision to your family to ensure your wishes are respected.
