CANCELLING YOUR ALBERTA VEHICLE REGISTRATION

Do you have a collection of licence plates hanging in your garage? While old plates can make a great design statement, they can also need more maintenance than you think.


Licence plates that are not returned to a Registry Agent stay registered in the owner’s name forever. That means any fines or investigations regarding the licence plate will always start with the owner or owners, even if the plate registration has expired or you’ve misplaced the plate.


For safety, consider reporting a lost plate or returning a plate you will no longer be using for cancellation.

WHAT YOU NEED TO CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION

  • One piece of identification that verifies you are the registrant

  • The registration, plates and stickers (if available)

  • If someone is cancelling the vehicle registration on your behalf, a completed Letter of Authorization form is required

  • If the vehicle registration is in two names, both signatures will be required for cancellation
